Next Webinar: Facilitation Success (& Failure)

The topic of facilitation is continuing to preoccupy us (and this webinar series).

Mark’s final comment last month was that “success in facilitiating is abstract.” There is no way to directly measure it, except by whether or not you helped guide the group to where it needed to go.

And a great question we didn’t get to was, “What happens if a facilitation is much shorter than expected (or longer), or goes somewhere else entirely? Is it still a success?”

This month, we are tackling those questions head on. In particular, we want to explore the question, “What actually determines the success or failure of a facilitation?”

Both of us agree that the final outcome does not belong to us, that it’s not our meeting, and that is is up to the group to decide their destination. Mark related how one of his sessions needed to spend time on ‘team building’ before they could get to the original goal of strategy.

Peter has also facilitated meetings where a side issue was raised, that was then agreed by most of the attendees to be the most important thing they could address—but was NOT what the person who initiated the meeting wanted. Was the facilitation a failure? A success? A disaster? A triumph? Who decides? The attendees? The client? The facilitator? And how do they decide? Based on what criteria?

These are difficult questions – and we’ll explore them as best we can. This month, Peter and Mark are both presenting, as they explore this topic together, and attempt to define some essential answers. You’ll get insight into how to think about and frame success for yourself. You’ll also gain strategies for positioning and guiding how success is perceived and evaluated by others. And you’ll learn additional insights into how to approach, lead and assess facilitation opportunities.

You’ll also get to shape the content and direction of the webinar. We’re asking you to send us your most burning additional questions around facilitation. We’ll do our best to answer them.

As always, spread the word to those who might be interested in this webinar. You’re welcome to point entire associations, companies and small countries to these links. You would be doing us a favour if you did pass this on.
