The Project Management Professional (PMP) designation is a recognized credential world-wide in the field of project management. Project managers that hold the PMP designation are recognized for their experience in leading projects and their knowledge of a standardized framework for the management of projects.
As of August 2014, more than 617,000 people from around the world hold the PMP designation.
The PMP designation is focussed on the leadership of projects, regardless of industry or project type. Certificate holders include project managers in technology, research, construction, engineering, marketing, not-for-profits and public-sector organizations. The basis of the PMP is a standard framework of project management process and terminology, and provides a common universal means of referencing and applying project management processes.
Should I Consider the CAPM Instead?
The Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) was designed as an alternative designation for those working in project management that did not meet the experience requirements necessary to qualify for the PMP. The examination for the CAPM is extremely similar to the PMP exam course, and our PMP Exam Preparation Workshop is equally relevant in preparing for the CAPM.
Given the widespread popularity and recognition of the PMP, however, it is our recommendation that if you are close to qualifying for the PMP you consider deferring your certification until that time.
What Other Certifications Are Available?
PMI has a range of additional certifications that have been developed to support more specific specializations in the project management field. The overwhelming majority of people certified by PMI hold the PMP, by an extremely wide margin. The following is an overview of certificate numbers for each of PMI’s certificates, as at August 2014:
- Project Management Professional – 617,986
- Certified Associate in Project Management – 25,717
- Program Management Professional – 1,068
- PMI Risk Management Professional – 2,795
- PMI Scheduling Professional – 1,194
