How we manage projects needs to be flexible. And yet how project management is represented is often thought of as well-defined, specific and prescriptive.

There is no one single type of project, and there is no one way to manage projects successfully. What works depends upon the outcomes that organizations value, and how best to realize those outcomes. That is shaped by the types of projects, the skill and abilities of the people and teams involved and particularly the culture of the organization.

This seminar explores the strategies necessary to align how we manage projects with what is culturally appropriate—and acceptable—in our projects. It explores what effective project management looks like as an outcome, not as a process. You will be exposed to the ideas and considerations associated with managing a single mission-critical project, or evolving the practices of your organization as a whole. You will explore what to evaluate and consider in assessing appropriate options, processes, tools and capabilities. You’ll be exposed to the critical stages of adopting and implementing project management as a strategic organizational capability that works in your organization. Most importantly, you will have a firm grasp on the cultural influences that shape what is possible and define what is necessary in making sure your projects are delivered well.

Seminar leader Mark Mullaly, PhD, is a world-renowned expert in organizational project management, and the lead instructor in Executive Education’s project management programs. A well-respected research, consultant and educator with more than 25 years of experience, Mark was co-lead investigator of the Value of Project Management research project. This landmark study of how and why organizations implement project management was the first to demonstrate a clear link between the practices and maturity of an organization and the value and effectiveness of its projects. It remains the largest study undertaken in the field, and one of the most influential.
